This special graduating senior needs no introduction. Jason Chin, this year’s valedictorian, is graduating with the highest GPA in MTHS history and is constantly praised by students and staff alike. In between the workload of the 5 AP courses he’s taking this year, Chin enjoys playing board games and watching Spy x Family.
He has been a Principal’s List student all throughout his high school career. Chin was also awarded Student of the Month in May of 2021 and is the proud recipient of this year’s National Merit Scholarship.
Chin is currently the President of Math Honor Society, but previously held a position as the Vice President of Tutoring during his junior year. During his time with the club, he has planned a Pi Day celebration, kickstarted the tutoring program after in-person school resumed, and organized various projects like a supply drive. He is also serving as the President of FBLA and used to be the Vice President of Treasury last year. While in FBLA, Chin competed at the National Leadership Conference, placing first in Retail Management and fourth in LifeSmarts.
In addition to being a member of the Spanish Honor Society, he is also a member of Model UN, where he represented Brazil at this year’s Security Council. Chin was voted Premier Diplomat at this event, too.
Outside of school, Chin spends his time volunteering at the Monroe Township Public Library. Here, he shelves books of different genres. He also volunteers at the National Guard Militia Museum in Lawrenceville. Not only does he organize displays and tidy up exhibits, but Chin also talks to veterans at the museum as well.
Something Chin is especially passionate about is the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps. His current rank is Petty Officer 3rd Class. Through this experience, Chin has been able to complete different boot camps at West Point and submarine training programs at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut. While he admits the training was difficult, Chin credits these experiences for his great leadership skills today. He has also been involved in parades and ceremonies as a Sea Cadet.
On May 1st, Chin celebrated his commitment to the University of Pennsylvania, his dream school. He plans on majoring in Mathematical Economics and is still considering a double major in International Relations. Chin also received a Navy ROTC scholarship which is going to fully cover his tuition. Besides furthering his academic career, Chin is joining Penn’s Navy ROTC unit.
Chin’s dad, who currently serves in the Army Reserve, has been very influential when Chin was finalizing his plans for the coming years. In fact, Chin shared, “…His dedication to serving others has been an inspiration for me. He’s the one who encouraged me to join the Sea Cadets as an opportunity to experience new things and grow as a person…As a freshman, the prospect of applying to colleges and living away from home seemed daunting. Now I feel very excited for my future.”
Eventually, Chin hopes to have a career in investment or finance as well as serve on active duty as a Naval officer. Special congratulations to Jason Chin on being this year’s valedictorian and thank you for your future service!
