According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), from January 1 to April 26, 2019, 704 individual cases of measles have been confirmed in 22 states, one being New Jersey. This is the greatest number of reported cases in the U.S. since 1994 and since the measles was declared eliminated in 2000.
There is no cure for measles but is considered a vaccine-preventable disease. Measles is a very contagious disease which is caused by a virus affecting the respiratory system. Ninety percent of people who come into contact with an infected person will get measles if they are not vaccinated. Symptoms would include (but not limited to): a high fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes and rash (usually appears 3-5 days after symptoms begin).
People at the highest risk are:
– Infants & children < 5 years
– Adults > 20 years
– Pregnant women
– People with compromised immune systems (leukemia and HIV infection)
The CDC recommends a third dose of the MMR vaccine be administered to improve protection during the outbreak—now available to the public at Hickory Pharmacy in East Windsor, NJ.
