School is out and summer is in! It’s that special time for pool parties, beach relaxation, and of course sizzling hot days. One of the best ways to escape the blazing warmth is by grabbing a bucket of popcorn and cooling off in the movie theatre. Summer is known for Hollywood blockbusters and highly anticipated films. This summer is no exception! There are many promising movies to see this summer that are perfect for a fun day out of the summer heat. Here are seven films that won’t disappoint!
Rocketman
Actor Taron Egerton sparks Oscar buzz as he brilliantly portrays rock-star Elton John, in the biopic about John’s life and musical career. The film is for mature viewers, rated R, and covers John’s personal life with all of its ups and downs, from drug use to exploring sexuality. Also, it chronicles how John went from difficult beginnings to the absolute pinnacle of rock ‘n roll fame and fortune. Fans of the British rock star should put this at the top of their watchlist for the summer. This movie has been rocking in theatres since May 31.
Men in Black: International
The fourth installment of the popular saga introduces new agents, played by Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Based in London, the agents typ- ically battle against alien forces and mysterious monsters of the universe. However, the newest version puts the undercover emissaries up to their most daunting task yet, fighting a mole within their own organization. MIB:International is a daring story that is a must see for fans of this classic franchise. Moreover, it features just the right balance of comedic bits and supernatural adventure that will surely warrant excitement from the audience. Abducting audiences around the country on June 14.
Toy Story 4
The fourth and final instalment of the vintage Disney animated series about the life of beloved toys. In this movie, Sheriff Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of their friends meet a new companion, Forky. Forky is the focus of the new crisis and sends the gang on an exhilarating final adventure. On this latest journey, the brood encounters friends both old and new confirming the theme song “you’ve got a friend in me”. Die-hard Disney fans have been waiting for almost a decade for this release and it surely will not disappoint. The film is set to be released on June 21 and will definitely be a sentimental rollercoaster as viewers say goodbye to the adored characters. Bring along your tissues…Toy Story 4 is a true summer must-see.
Yesterday
In this upbeat PG-13 film, a struggling singer-songwriter named Jack Malik is struck by a bus during a global blackout. When he wakes up, he is un- explainably the only person on Earth who remembers the legendary band the Beatles and their songs. Jack then spins their iconic songs as his own, becoming an international celebrity over-night. The film has many highs and lows and is an utter emotional seesaw, as Jack deals with the benefits and the burdens of being an international celebrity. It is a very heartfelt story that is a must see for Beatles fans and lovers of a good rom/com. Yesterday rocks into theatres on June 28.
Spider-Man: Far From Home
The 23rd installment of the critically acclaimed Marvel Cinematic Universe is the second film in the universe that follows the very relatable super-teen, Peter Parker. Peter, who is secretly Spider-Man, fresh off the events of Avengers: Endgame, embarks on a European vacation with his high school class- mates. He is still coping with the death of his father-figure, Tony Stark (Iron Man), from Endgame. Additionally, young Peter feels obligated to fill the shoes of his former superhero idol. While traversing the continent, he is recruited by Agent Nick Fury to fight alongside Mysterio, a new and seemingly evil character. Peter goes on the ride of a lifetime, venturing into the world of action, adventure and love. Along the way he discovers his true self. Marvel fans fly over to catch this edge-of-the-seat escapade as it swings into theaters on July 2.
Stuber
A perfectionist Uber driver named Stu is thrust into the action-packed thrill of a lifetime when a Los Angeles Police Department officer, played by Dave Bautista, enters his rideshare and brings him along on unofficial police adventures. It is the perfect mix of tenacity and a character trying to find its voice. A quintessential odd couple storyline, the film includes a motley of comedic moments that will make the audience laugh out loud. Furthermore, from fiery explosions to dramatic car chases, the film has no shortage of action scenes for the real adventure lovers. This puts it on the top of the bucket list for those yearning for a good laugh on a summer day. Stuber stops by theatres on July 12.
The Lion King
This new release of Lion King is a live action remake of the 1994 Disney animated classic. Filled with a star-studded cast including Donald Glover, Beyon- cé Knowles-Carter, James Earl Jones, and Seth Rogen, the plot involves a young lion, Simba, becoming a leader after his father, Mufasa, is murdered by his uncle, Scar. Simba goes on an emotional journey through the Pridelands, getting help from friends such as Nala, Pumbaa, and Timon. He eventually finds his way understanding his pivotal role in the “circle of life”. The classic Disney tale pounces into cinemas on July 19.
